ONE STEP AT A TIME

Let’s make it

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F. Line an 8-inch square metal baking pan with parchment, leaving overhang on two sides.
  2. Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl in short bursts. Whisk in the sugar, then let the mixture cool until warm rather than hot.
  3. Whisk in the eggs and vanilla until smooth and slightly thickened.
  4. Sift in the cocoa, flour, and salt. Fold just until no dry streaks remain, then stir in the chocolate chips. Fold in the walnuts if using.
  5. Spread the batter evenly in the pan. Bake for 25–30 minutes, until the edges are set and a toothpick inserted near the center has moist crumbs but no liquid batter.
  6. Let cool in the pan for at least 1 hour. Lift out using the parchment and cut into 16 squares.

Storing & reheating

Keep covered at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze well-wrapped squares for up to 2 months.
